As an artist, my focus is primarily on Landscapes and Figures.  I paint primarily in oil.

Having been a member of the Art Guild of the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in the Pasadena, California area for nearly 10 years, has given me the fortunate gift and honor of painting plein air landscapes in their extraordinary, extensive gardens.

In addition, for years, the city of Los Angeles and Southern California have offered me the experience of their varied and colorful landscapes and peoples to paint as well.

Besides painting live in the Landscape, I enjoy the challenge painting people provides.   People are so varied in their energy and physical presence.  Hence, I have a history of painting the live model.   I enjoy composing Figures in the landscape, be it in an exterior or in an interior landscape.

Studio paintings that I have done, are derived from extensive observations, sensory experiences, and memory from my live work.   At times, I may also utilize reference photos for my studio work.  Figures are often discovered from my serendipitous outings in Los Angeles.

Beside important elements of composition, I am drawn to experimenting with color relationships, often changing palettes from painting to painting.  And at times, shifting my color ideas while working during the painting process.

Various paintings may call for the different techniques of glazing or alla prima.

In addition, although my paintings may appear realistic, the viewer may see that I often include abstract passages in my work.

My hope is that I have imparted to the viewer my interpretation of images I have experienced; images that may draw one in emotionally, sometimes due to their sense of timelessness.  And that the viewer may bring their own memories and feelings when gazing upon my paintings.
